Week 26 - SIX MONTHS!!!

Hi Everyone!

How are you all doing? I hope everyone is doing great and enjoying the snow up there! Send me pictures of the snow! And of all of your beautiful faces! I hope you are all having a wonderful Christmas season and remembering the amazing gift we have of our Savior Jesus Christ.

So we have been focusing a lot down here on Araceli Luna, our cute little investigator who will be getting baptized on December 26th. I am sooooo excited for her! She is 17 years old and has such a strong desire to follow Jesus Christ. She's been through a lot and is going through a lot in her life right now. Last night we had a lesson with her and she had just come from the hospital where her uncle had been for the past month. She said her uncle is like her dad (her mom died when she was little and her dad left). So it's been really hard for her to see him so sick. We had a lesson yesterday about relying on Jesus Christ and His Atonement. We taught her how the Atonement doesn't only cover sins and mistakes, but also how it comforts us when we're sad and gives us strength in our afflictions. She has so much faith and I love seeing her growing and changing as she accepts and loves this gospel.

Something I have been reflecting on a lot is how we need to accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. During this Christmas season, we've been sharing the new Christmas video with lots of families and people to help them remember the reason for Christmas. Over 2,000 years ago, a Savior was born. And that holy moment affects our lives every day. We need to be accepting Him as our Savior every single day. We need to rely on Him in all we do and follow His perfect example.

I hope you all take time every day this week, this month to reflect on Him and your relationship with Him. I know He loves us! I love each and every one of you and I am grateful for you love and everything you do. Make it an amazing week!

Love, Hermana Rachel Winward :)

Week 25 - There are always Miracles

Buenas Tardes Todos!

How are y'all doing? Hermana Gonzalez and her Texas-ness is rubbing off on me. Haha, she's great! I hope you are all doing really good though. Hopefully you all had the chance to watch the Christmas devotional last night and feel of the CHRISTmas spirit.

This week has been a little tough because we haven't been able to find new investigators, but we have the faith to find and the diligence to work! I know that as we keep pressing forward and serving with all of our strength, we will discover miracles.

Right now, we have a baptism planned for December 26th for Araceli Luna. I am so excited for her and I know she is becoming truly converted unto Christ. She is amazing!

This morning, I was studying 3 Nephi 27 and I am just amazed by the way this gospel works. We can be filled with love and mercy if we simply come unto Christ and let ourselves be cleansed by Him. It's a commandment that we do this and keep enduring to the end. He loves us so much that He died for us and then pleads with us to live His gospel so that we can live with Him again. I love my Savior. He is my best friend.

I love you all so much. I invite you all to take a moment this week to study Christ's doctrine and then make the changes you need to so you can LIVE it. He is with you every step of the way!

Have an amazing week!

Love, Hermana Winward

P.S. Here's a couple of pictures of my area and this cool nativity I got for Christmas!

Week 24 - Feliz Diciembre!

Hey Everyone!

How are you all doing? Did you have an amazing Thanksgiving? I sure did! We ate so much food at the Tharp's last week...it was great! I hope everyone is doing well.

So this week was cambios (transfers) again! I feel like we just barely had them. Hermana Gonzalez and I have been wanting to stay together, but I had already had three transfers here in Cañete, so I thought that I was probably leaving. But the whole time leading up to cambios, we didn't really feel like anything would happen. When I woke up Saturday morning (they call us that night to tell us the changes), I felt like I would be leaving. All day I was thinking of what I would need to tell or show Hermana Gonzalez so that she would know before I left. When they called us that night, our district leader said we didn't have cambios and we'd be staying together! We were both sooooo happy! I am so excited to be staying here in San Vicente and working side by side with Hermana Gonzalez.

Earlier this week, we had intercambios and I was able to go to Mala with Hermana Ramirez and her companion came here with Hermana Gonzalez. I was able to learn a lot and set some good goals to help me focus on listening to the Spirit and be better in my teaching.

I hope you all have had the opportunity to watch the new Christmas video. If not, stop what you are doing right now and go watch it! It is amazing. I hope you all catch the Christmas spirit and share it with everyone you see!!! I love you all and hope you have an amazing week! :)

Love, Hermana Winward

Week 23 - Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Buenos Dias Everyone!!!

How are you all doing? I am doing great! I have a funny story...So this week after district and zone meeting, one of the zone leaders pulled out a bunch of packages. And they were almost all for me! Haha it was crazy and awesome. You are all the BEST!!! I loved reading your notes and I am really enjoying the American candy :)

So yesterday was Conferencia de Districto. It's like stake conference, but different since it's only branches here in Cañete. President and Hermana McGinn came down, so it was good to hear from them and other leaders. Araceli Luna, our investigator who is getting baptized December 12th, came with her grandpa. We were able to introduce them to President McGinn. It was really good!

Other than that, not a lot has been going on because our appointments keep falling! God is just testing our faith a lot, but it's just making us stronger :)

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving this week! We are about to go to the Tharps to have a big Thanksgiving dinner and I am SO excited!!! Haha :)

Read Alma 26:12,37. My great Thanksgiving is God's mercy over all of His children. I am so grateful for the gift of grace.

I love you all and I am so grateful for your love and support, it never ceases to amaze me!

Love, Hermana Winward :)

Week 22 - I ate a Reese's

Good morning everyone! How are you all doing? I hope all is well in cold Utah. :) Guess what? Two things: Yes, I actually did eat a Reese's this morning. There's this store that sells American candy and I wish I would have never found it... Hahaha. And numero dos: Today marks me being a missionary for CINCO MESES
Five months feels like five minutes. It is so crazy.

So not a whole lot has been going on this week. Actually we saw a lot of miracles from God. For example, it has been like two weeks since we've been able to find Giorgino, but we found him on Saturday night and he's alive!!! He told us he was going to come to church and bring two friends. It was great! He didn't end up coming to church, but at least we know he's alive and still praying and reading his scriptures! We'll have an appointment with him tomorrow. So another good thing that happened was we found a new investigator named Roberta. She is a cute little abuelita that loves to knit. She is adorable! She doesn't understand a word I say, even though I am speaking Spanish, so my companion has to translate it all. It's pretty funny. That actually happens a lot. Haha.

On Wednesday, we had a training with President and Hermana McGinn in Chincha. It was just the hermanas and district and zone leaders. It was so great! Another huge miracle that happened there was watching the new Christmas video. It was a miracle that it worked and we were able to watch it twice. We were some of the first to see it and it was amazing! I can't wait for you all to see it. It's called ''A Savior is Born.'' I felt the spirit so strongly as I watched it. I love this time of year and knowing that just 2,015 years ago, our Savior was humbly born into this earth. I know He lives! What better good news is there than that? Just Remember Him!

I love you all sooooo much! Thank you for everything you do! Keep doing what you can to be a missionary in your example and words. He will give you all the strength to do it!

Love, Hermana Rachel Winward :)

Week 21 - 360 degrees

Hey Everyone!!!

How are you all doing? Things here in San Vicente are absolutely amazing! I feel like things have completely changed since last week. Last Sunday, I was feeling really down because we hadn't found hardly any new investigators for a couple weeks. This week, we found EIGHT new investigators! It was such a miracle. On Friday during our giant weekly planning session, Hermana Gonzalez and I were both feeling a little discouraged. She has been feeling really homesick and I was stressing out about the area. So we were both crying and then hugging each other. But when we left to work that day, we ended up having a really good day! And then Saturday was even better! We actually sing a little song everyday together that's from Spongebob...hahaha. ''It's the best day ever! (Best day ever!)'' It helps us always stay positive and see the blessing a lot more in every day. I am so grateful that God is in charge of this work and can bring so much hope and happiness.

So yesterday, we had an amazing experience. We were planning a Noche de Hogar (Family Home Evening) for our pensionista's family. Milagros, our pensionista, was rescued in June and her son Alonso was also baptized in June. She has another son, Esmith, who is 8 and will probably get baptized soon too. Her husband is also name Alonso and we taught him a few times with Hna Guzman when I first got here, but then he didn't really want to listen anymore. So we invited them to the church for the NDH, along with a lot of other families. Well they are the only ones who showed up, but it ended up being perfect. We talked about Thanksgiving and being grateful for the Atonement. My companion started it off and as she was talking, a thought came to my mind that we should watch that ''Because of Him'' video. So we ran into the little family history room and looked up the video. After we watched it, we were talking with them about the video. I felt sooooo strongly that we needed to ask Alonso to be baptized. As I extended the invitation, I felt the spirit so much. I could feel it working through me. He nodded his head and said ''Yes''. His family was surprised but so happy. It was absolutely incredible. Before they left that night, Alonso drew on the whiteboard. We were all watching him to see what it was and then we realized it was Jesus Christ. It was so amazing! Afterwards, we made a little thankful turkey and played some fun games. Their family was having so much fun and laughing so much. I loved being a part of that. I know that they will be sealed in the temple. They all want it so bad. I am so blessed to be a part of their journey and to see the Atonement of Jesus Christ working in their lives. I testify that families are eternal. I am so grateful for the happiness and hope our families provide for us. I LOVE MY AMAZING FAMILY!!!

I hope you all have a wonderful week and look for miracles every day. They come, they are always there. Our loving families are such wonderful miracles in our lives. I love you all so much!!!

Love, Hermana Winward

Week 20 He heals us all

Buenos Dias!

How is everyone doing? I hope school and everything is going well for you all. I can't believe it's already November! It's so crazy.

So this week has been pretty uneventful because both Hermana Gonzalez and I have been sick. The elder in charge of health told us to stay home on Thursday so we could rest and feel better. I slept a ton and it felt like I hadn't slept in ten years! My body was just completely exhausted. But now we are both feeling a lot better.

Yesterday I was feeling pretty overwhelmed because I felt like I wasn't accomplishing anything. My district leader told me something that really helped a lot. He said with all the small things we do, we will see miracles. I realized that I was lacking the faith I need to make those miracles happen. Now I will have more faith as I put ALL my trust in Him and let Him be in control of His work. I know the miracles will come!

There's a lot of work to do here in San Vicente, Cañete, Peru and I am soooo ready to get to work! I know that as we get to work, listening to the Spirit, we will always see miracles!!! I love you all so much! Please tell me about the miracles you are seeing in your lives, and have an amazing week!

Love, Hermana Winward :)

P.S. Read 3 Nephi 17, it is full of beautiful miracles.

Week 19 Just another week in the missionary life

Hola Familia and everyone else! :)

So...I just don't even know anymore. My life is crazy here in Peru. Haha, but it is amazing :) My mom, Hermana Guzman, finished her mission on Sunday and it was the saddest thing ever. I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to work with her and learn so much from her about diligence and charity. She is amazing!

Something funny that Hermana Guzman always told me was that I was going to train right after I got done with training. She would tell like everyone we saw that I was going to have an ''hija'' (daughter) this next transfer. When I started my training, they said the goal was for everyone to be ready to train once they finished their training. I always thought that was a nice goal to have in mind, but didn't think it happened hardly ever. Last Wednesday, our zone had interviews with President McGinn, which was super great! He is such a spiritual giant. We are lucky to have him here in the mission. While we were there, the assistants to the president and zone leaders kept asking me if I was ready to train. I just laughed and said ''I'm not going to train!''

Well, on Saturday night, we got a call from the district leader to tell us about transfers. Hermana Guzman and I sat on her bed and listened as he said ''Hermana Winward...va a capicitar!!!'' (You are going to train!) I SCREAMED and laughed and started crying all at the same time. It was so crazy!!! I just barely finished my training, my first 12 weeks in the field, and now I am going to train!

Yesterday morning (Tuesday), I went up to Lima and met my new companion. Her name is Hermana Gonzalez and she is absolutely amazing!!! She's from Texas and her parents are from Mexico, so she already speaks both English and Spanish! YES!!! Haha it's a miracle. She was only in the CCM for 2 weeks, and now she's here with me in San Vicente, Cañete! I am soooo excited to work with her! She has a strong testimony and is so excited to share it with the world. This is going to be the best transfer ever!!!

I hope you all are having a wonderful week! I love you all so much!!! Sigan Adelante! Les quiero muchisimo!

Week 17 Broken Hearts

Buenos Dias!

How is everyone doing? I hope all is well! Things here in Peru are just fantastic.

This weekend was really hard. Hermana Guzman and I have been teaching Horacio and Loren for a while now, getting them ready for baptism. Horacio was going to be baptized this Saturday and Loren on the 31st (or when she felt ready). On Friday night, we had a lesson with Horacio to prepare him a little more for his baptismal interview on Saturday. He shared his testimony with us of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith. We felt the spirit so strongly. He was so excited and so ready for his baptism. And then Saturday came... He had his interview planned on Saturday but didn't show up. Neither one of them would answer their phones, so we went to their house. He came out and said he needed to talk to us. So we went in and sat down with him and Loren. He basically told us that he doesn't believe in the doctrine and that he can't be baptized. Loren was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, so she has a hard time in believing everything and always doubts or questions things. They had let go of that faith they had just a short time ago and began to doubt again. The only thing we could do was testify of Christ. We both bore our testimonies of what we knew to be true. And then we left. I was absolutely heartbreaking. It was hard to see them reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ after they had felt the Spirit and come to know that it's true. We were both crying and so was Loren. We have developed a lot of love for them, and it was hard to see them reject the truth. My heart is broken for them. But I have faith and hope that one day, they will humble themselves and come unto Christ. That day will be a beautiful day.

For now, we are pushing forward and we are doing all we can to find new investigators! I know the Lord is preparing people and I know that His timing is perfect. He is all knowing and all loving. I am so grateful for the testimony I have of this gospel. I know this church is true. I know that Christ is my Savior and He lives!

I hope you all have a great week! Always remember to trust in God. He will never let you down!

Week 16 - Conferencia General

Hey Everyone!

How are you all doing? I hope you all enjoyed conference as much as I did! It was so uplifting for me. I want to hear about what you all learned about!

Something that really stuck out to me was how we can seek ways to be better. We can always start right where we are to become a better person. If we don't know where to start, we can kneel in prayer to our Father and ask Him what we need to change. Then we need to listen. This is the part I forget to do sometimes... But I know He hears our prayers. He knows our strengths and our weaknesses, and He will help up on our path towards perfection.

Everything here in San Vicente is going well! We are going to keep working hard with Horacio and Loren, but also focus on finding new investigators.

I hope you are all doing well! Have a fantastic week and remember to apply the words you heard this weekend in conference!

I love you all!!!!!

Love, Hermana Rachel Winward :)

Week 15 - Best Week Ever!!!

Buenos Dias Todos!

How are you all doing? I hope everything is going well for you. Happy Primavera (Spring) from here in Peru! I sure miss the beautiful Fall weather in Utah, but I hope you are all enjoying every moment! :)

So this week was super busy but super amazing! Hermano Giorgino was baptized on Saturday! Whoohoo!!! It was a great day and we felt the spirit so much. A lot of members came to support him. He was so happy and I know that Heavenly Father is even more happy for him.

After the baptism, we got to watch the General Women's Conference! Thankfully, I got to watch it in English with Hermana Tharp and Hermana Freyre. I loved the story from President Uchtdorf about Eva and her aunt Rosa. I learned so much from the conference and felt my testimony grow.

We saw another big milagro (miracle) this week in a family we've been teaching. I think I might have mentioned something a long time ago about Horacio and Loren. They were the first people I had a lesson with here in Cañete. Well we've been teaching them a little here and there during this time, but Horacio had a problem with his leg and couldn't walk for a while, so they didn't come to church and it was hard to find a time to teach them both together. Well we taught them a couple weeks ago and were thinking about dropping them. Then we were busy with Giorgino and other things, so we didn't have time to visit them. On Thursday night, they called us and asked how we were doing and said they missed us. So we scheduled a lesson for Saturday morning. Honestly, that lesson was one of the most perfect lessons I have ever been a part of. They are so ready to change and to do whatever it takes to come unto Christ. They both came to the baptism of Giorgino on Saturday and Loren stayed for the Women's Conference! They also came to church on Sunday and stayed for the whole block. They are so excited and ready to be baptized. They have a date for October 31st, but it might be a little earlier than that!

Well, there's some little snipits of my busy but amazing week! I hope you all have a wonderful week this week. Don't forget to watch conference this weekend and listen to what the Lord needs you to hear right now. D&C 1:38. I love you all soooooo much!!!

Love, Hermana Rachel Winward :)

P.S. Funny Story: Remember my teacher from the CCM, Hermano Vasquez? Well he came to visit Cañete this weekend! Here served here about a year ago and came to propose to his girlfriend on the beach in Cerro Azul! It was so great to see him at church on Sunday. He's awesome!!!

Week 14 Paciencia

Hello Everyone!

How are you all doing? I hope life is great for you all! If not, do what you can to make it great! I have some exciting news...we have a baptism on Saturday for hermano Giorgino! (He told us it's pronounced Gee-or-gee-no, haha). I am really excited! He is so great. He's 19 years old and he's practically a member already. He goes to church every week, attends the YSA (JAS en espanol) activities, and he's even in a mission prep class for institute! He probably knows more than I do, haha. We have truly seen the power of the Atonement change his life. It is so amazing.

We had our patience tested a lot this week as we tried to have appointments with Giorgino. Almost every day we had lessons planned with him and he never showed up. Thursday was a really hard day, but we made it through and now all is well! We finally met with him on Friday, and now we'll be having lessons almost every day to finish teaching him before Saturday.

We have a crazy week ahead of us! Tomorrow we have a multi-zone meeting, then intercambios! Hermana Tuquerrez, the sister leader, is going to come here to San Vicente, so I get to lead the area for a day! Then we have Giorgino's baptism and women's conference on Saturday. Antonio, a 20 year old less active, will be ''rescued'' on Sunday. He has also changed so much and now wants to serve a mission! We just need to finish teaching him also. This week is going to be awesome!!!

I hope you all have an amazing week! Thank you for everything. I love you all so much!!!

Love, Hermana Winward :)

Week 12 Cambios! and Week 13 Finding with Faith

Hola Everyone!

How are you all doing?! I hope school and work and everything else in your lives is going well. I think about you all so much, and I'm sorry I don't always have time to write to each of you individually. This hour goes by so fast...But I do love reading all your emails and hearing how you are doing. Also, congratulations to my favorite little brother Blake! I am so proud of you and so happy that you chose to be baptized. I told almost everyone I saw ''Mi hermanito va a bautisarse hoy dia!'' which means ''My little brother is getting baptized today!'' I am so happy for you Blake and I love you so much!

So this week was Cambios (transfers) and that's why I'm emailing today and not yesterday! But nothing changed for us. I am with Hermana Guzman for one for cambio and we are staying here in San Vicente, Cañete. This is Hna Guzman's last transfer, so we are going to make the best of it!

Funny story: I got another bug bite on my OTHER foot that made it swell up like a big red balloon again. This time it hurt more than the first time. On Wednesday, I stayed at Elder and Hermana Tharp's casa while Hermana Guzman went to lessons with a member. On Thursday, we called the office again and they told me to try my best to walk on it that day and see what happens. So I gave it 110% percent, and it was super painful at first, but by the end of the day, I couldn't really feel the pain that much. We walked a lot that day, but we also met a lot of the goals we had. It was awesome! The Lord truly does bless his servants with strength and miracles.

Another miracle from this week is that we finally have a true progressing investigator! His name is Georgino and he is about 20 years old. Hna Guzman taught him while I was at the Tharps on Wednesday night and invited him to be baptized. He said yes! We taught him on Saturday night, and he had this paper of notes he had taken on the things he learned from the scripture she left him to read. It was so great! We both can see that he is ready to change his life and follow Christ.

I am really excited to be staying here in San Vicente and to work as hard as I can. I have learned so much and I have so much more to learn with the language and how to be a better missionary. Thank you all so much for your love and prayers. Your loving support helps me get through each and every day and week. Thank you for you examples and wonderful testimonies! I love you all soooooooooooo much! Have an amazing week!!!

Love, Hermana Winward

P.S. Helaman 12:15 Always remember that no matter how crazy this world gets, Heavenly Father will always be constant. We need to obey Him and Trust in Him always!!!

Sept. 14, 2015

Buenos Dias to all my lovely family and friends!

How are you all doing? I hope you have all had a wonderful week! Things are going GREAT here in Peru! I still can't speak Spanish that great, but it's coming! I feel like I can understand people a lot better than before, so that's good. I kind of forgot how to pray in English, so there's that. Haha. I know I have the Gift of Tongues and I am so grateful!

So this transfer, Hermana Guzman and I have made a goal to focus on developing one Christlike Attribute. We both decided on Diligence. We have been trying to work diligently to find new investigators and just work hard in all that we do. Well our faith and hard work definitely paid off. On Thursday, we received a wonderful miracle. We were able to find four new investigators that day! It was so great. In one lesson, we felt the spirit so strongly as we shared about the First Vision. I know that Heavenly Father will bless us in whatever we need as long as we work faithfully and diligently for it.

Last night, we were in a combi to get to an appointment. A combi is a bus with a bunch of seats squished in there. Hermana Guzman and I were sitting in the front with the driver and she asked him if she could put a picture of Jesus on the dashboard. He said yes so she placed it up on the dashboard. It was funny because every time we hit a bump or something, it would fall over and the driver would reach over and put it back. Then this guy sitting behind us tapped me on the shoulder and asked if he could have one too. So I gave him one and we invited him to go to church! It was just something little, but it was fun to share those little pass along cards in a different way!

There's a little bit of my week! I hope you all have a wonderful week this week! Remember that the little things you do can and do make a difference!!! I love you all so much! Thank you for everything!!!

Love, Hermana Winward :)

Week 11 - Elder David Bednar

Hola Familia!

How are you all doing?! How was the first week of school? I hope everything went well and that you like your teachers and classmates and everything. I can't believe Emily's in high school and Nicki's in middle school...It's crazy!!!

So this week I had the best experience EVER! On Wednesday, a special visitor came to speak to Mision Lima Sur, Mision Lima Oeste, Mision Central, and the missionaries in el CCM. Elder David A. Bednar, his wife and Elder Waddel from the Seventy and his wife came to speak to us. We traveled to Lima and went to this Stake Center next door to the CCM and the place was full of hundreds of missionaries. I sat in the second row and was able to see them really well. We were able to ask questions and comment on the things we had learned from talks we read before. It was so fun and so so so spiritual. I felt the Spirit so strongly that whole day. It was an experience I'll never forget.

After that, Hermana Guzman and I stayed in Lima overnight because she had an interview with the mission president on Thursday. We were in the mission office pretty much all day long on Thursday and didn't get back to Cañete until about 7 in the evening. So we've had a lot of work to do and a lot of amazing things to apply since hearing from Elder Bednar!

I want to leave you with one last important thing I learned on Wednesday that you can all apply in your lives now and always. He shared with us the importance of always being steadfast in all we do. He gave an example of how sometimes when a temple is announced, the people who live around that area get really excited and start doing the things they should always be doing with more enthusiasm and excitement. They drive past the site of the temple everyday to see how it's coming. Once the temple is finished, they attend every week. But then they get bored and visit the temple less and less, and their lives get too busy to do those things they should consistently be doing. The best thing we can now and throughout our lives is be consistently steadfast. When he was sharing this, I thought of the Iron Rod--we always need to hold to the rod with firmness! Instead of getting really excited about something, we can just slowly but surely make the changes we need to every day to be better. Always remember to be steadfast and immovable!!!

I hope you all have an amazing week and keep trying a little harder to be a little better. I love you all with all my heart!!! :)

Love, Hermana Rachel Winward :)

Week 10 - Just keep swimming!

Hola Everyone!!!

How are you this week? I can't believe school is going to start soon! Good luck this week with everything and all the new beginnings!!! You are all in my prayers!

So this week was just silly. Haha I wasn't allowed to walk most of the week. I was capable of it, but I needed to let my foot heal. So Hermana Guzman was able to go out and work with some of the members while I either stayed home with a member or stayed with Elder and Hermana Tharp (a senior missionary couple--they are the BEST!). It was kind of nice to have a little time to practice the language more and everything. I still have no idea what's happening part of the time, but oh well!

Now my foot is almost completely better and I have been getting back to work. On Saturday, I was out and about again and we walked pretty much all day long! All of our appointments were falling through and things just weren't working out. In the night, we called up some recent converts to see if we could have a lesson with them because we just wanted to teach someone! It was a good lesson.

I spoke in church yesterday for my first time in Spanish! Besides bearing my testimony my first Sunday. It was weird because I prepared for it a little bit but I wasn't really that worried about speaking. When I got up to speak, I wasn't nervous and just said what I could. Later, my companion and others told me when I spoke, it all flowed well and was fluent. I definitely have been blessed with the Gift of Tongues!

Last night, I had a really great experience. We were teaching our pensionista and her family. They are recent converts and just the best family every. Raul has such a strong testimony. He always tells me how good I'm doing at learning Spanish. Magaly is so fun and her food is amazing! Haha she is from Brazil so she speaks Portuguese. I hardly ever can understand her but we both just laugh and that's good enough communication for us! They have one son named Lucas and he's 10 or 11. So we wanted to help Magaly strenghthen her testimony because she said she was having some doubts. We watched the Restoration video and talked about Joseph Smith. We shared our thoughts and things afterwards and I was able to bear my testimony. It was one of the most sincere testimonies I have ever said. Of course, I was crying and so was Magaly. I just felt the Spirit so strongly in that moment. It was one of the first times so far that I really felt like my testimony and the little things I am able to say really do make a difference. It was absolutely amazing.

This week, as you all start a new school year or continue what you're doing, try to take advantage of every opportunity you have to share your testimony. You may not feel like it will make a difference, but I promise it does!!! I love you all so much! Tengan un gran semana! Have a great week!

Love, Hermana Winward

P.S. Elder Bednar is coming in TWO DAYS!!! I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll let you know how it goes next week! :)

Week 9 - Life is CRAZY!

Hola Everyone!

How are you all doing? I hope everyone is doing well and getting ready for the new school year coming up! I can't believe that summer is already over for you all. I can't wait for winter to be over here...Haha I never liked being cold!

So this week was absolutely crazy--basically a spiritual, emotional, physical roller coaster! There are so many unexpected things that happen here on the mission. Some are an immediate blessing and with others, you have to search for it, but I promise it's there! For example, this week my foot was basically a giant red balloon and I had to go to a doctor in Lima yesterday. I'm still looking for the blessing in this experience, haha. But I know it's there! On Tuesday, I got bit by some kind of bug, but I didn't think much of it. The next day it was kind of swollen and red. Then every day kept getting worse, so we called the missionary over health stuff, and he told us to come up to Lima to go to the doctor. So we did! They prescribed an antibiotic so we'll see how it all goes. It's already a lot better!

I also had a lot of spiritual/emotional ups and downs this week. I tried to do all I could to focus on what I have to do and I put all my trust in the Lord. In return, He blessed me with more confidence, with more peace, and will a determination to keep moving forward. I know that He is looking out for me and for each and every one of us. Just reach out to Him and He is always there!!!

I love you all so much! Thank you for your faithful examples! Have an amazing week!!!

Love, Hermana Rachel Winward :)

Week 7 - Finally Getting to Work! and Week 8

Hey Everyone!

How are you doing? I hope everyone had a great week! I definitely had a really great week here in Cañete. It's been crazy but good! I had a lot to adjust to coming from the CCM. Seriously, I remember thinking the CCM was kind of sketchy at times when I first got there but not anymore! We were very protected in there, haha. Our apartment is actually really nice. We have a lot of room and a little kitchen and everything. It's really fun!

So this week we were able to commit two investigators to baptism, a husband and wife. It was so amazing. My first night here we taught this family and the husband received a priesthood blessing for his leg. Well the next day, we taught them and Hermana Guzman asked Horcaio (the husband) if he would be baptized. He said yes right away. Well actually, he said Sì! Because everything is in Spanish here, haha. Anyway, he really has a desire to change his life and follow Christ. His wife, Loren, however, was hesitant about being baptized and didn't commit. Actually, she's a Jehovah's Witness or something, so it was hard to get her to understand that we worship Jesus Christ and everything. Anyway, we scheduled a lesson with them for Saturday afternoon at the church. So on Saturday, we had a lesson with them and two recent converts at the church. We watched this video about having faith in Christ. Afterwards, we talked more about Christ and the gospel. The two recent converts bore their testimonies. Then I was able to ask Loren if she would be baptized and she said yes. It was so great. I felt the spirit so strong during that lesson.

Yesterday, Horacio, Loren and their son Horacio Jr. came to church. During Sunday School, everyone was bearing their testimonies. Loren shared her experience during the lesson the night before in the very same room we were in for Sunday School. She said she had prayed to receive an answer of the truth before that lesson. She was able to receive and recognize her answer during that lesson and she said she will never forget that experience. It was so amazing.

I am so grateful to be a part of this work. I already love this family so much and all the others we have met and taught as well. The people here are so great! I know that the Lord prepares the hearts of people to receive His gospel and come unto Him. And I know that if it were not for Him and for the Holy Ghost, none of the work we do as missionaries would be possible. I am excited for this week and I'm so grateful to be a missionary!!!

Love, Hermana Winward :)

Hola Everyone!

I don't have a lot of time to write, so this won't be very long. Thank you so much for all your emails and prayers and everything you do for me! I'm sorry I don't have time to write everyone very much, hopefully that will change at some point!

This week I had a lot of ups and downs. I was with some other North American sisters last week for a day and that was really nice. It gave me a lot more confidence to open my mouth and speak. I've been so blessed with the gift of tongues during this time. It is truly amazing.

Today, we found out the Elder Bednar is coming to our mission on August 26th!!! I am so excited! I can't wait to learn from him. It is going to be so great.

Funny thing: My companion Hermana Guzman talks in her sleep a lot! The other night she was inviting someone to read the Book of Mormon and pray to know it's true. Then the next night she was singing Called to Serve. But all of that was in Spanish! Haha it's pretty funny!

I hope you all have a great week! I love you all soooooo much!

Alma 12:24--How are you preparing?

Week 6 - Goodbye CCM, Hello Cañete!

Buenos Dias!

How are all of you? I am doing great! Yesterday, I left the CCM and now I am in the mission field! Basically, I entered a whole other world that is way different than anything I could have ever imagined! Haha but it's really great. There's a few things from the CCM I want to share about and then I'll write about cambios (transfers)!

So last P-day, after we emailed, our district got to go make cookies with Hermana Gonzalez (the CCM president's wife) in her kitchen. They live in on of the buildings on the second floor, so we just walked over there! It was so much fun! That night I got the biggest headache, probably from all the sugar I'm not used to anymore. Haha it was really fun though.

The other day, we said goodbye to all of our teachers. It was really really sad! We left for dinner and knew they wouldn't be back when we were done, and we all looked in the window that's on the door, and that was the last time we saw them! Hermano Vásquez said "Los vamos en el reign de Dios!" That means "We'll see you in the kingdom of God!" I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to learn from them. I just loved my whole district. Every one of them are wonderful people!

Yesterday morning, we woke up early, ate our last meal at the CCM, then went next door to a church and waited for our mission presidents to pick us up (for the Lima missions). We rode to the mission office with them and there were 9 hermanas going to Lima Sur--no elders! Haha. We were in the mission office for almost 6 hours just doing training stuff. Then we met our trainers! It was super fun and exciting. My companion is Hermana Guzmán from Argentina. She has been out for like 15 months or something. She is the sweetest person ever!!! I feel so blessed that she is my trainer. She doesn't know very much english at all so we mostly just laugh at the ginormous language barrier we have. Haha, it's pretty great. We took a taxi from the mission office to the bus station and she taught the taxi driver about the Restoration while we listened to Bruno Mars and Katy Perry music in the taxi! I just thought it was the best moment ever because it was like my first real lesson. We did teach one lesson last night to this family about the priesthood. Actually, the zone leaders came and gave a blessing to the husband because there's something wrong with his leg and he can't walk. That was a really neat experience!

Cañete is really fun! We ride probably the same kind of Jeepney things that Cassie rode in the Philippines. They are so funny! We were in one last night and there was this little head thing hanging from the dashboard area, and it reminded me of those heads in Harry Potter. Haha. I am really excited to be here and I can't wait to learn more and serve with all I've got!!!

I love you all and I hope you have a wonderful week! Remember to recognize tender mercies every day!

Love, Hermana Winward :)

Week 5 - Lima Sur, here I come!

Hola Everyone!

How are you all doing? I am doing fantastic! Being a missionary is so great!!! And I only have 5 more days in the CCM until I'm out in the real mission field! That's so crazy. I feel like I just got here. That means that the next time I email (whenever that is!) will be from some random place in Peru. I'm sure it will be awesome!

Yesterday, me and the other hermanas in my district who are going to Lima Sur were talking to one of our teachers about the mission. He served in Lima Sur too and he just returned in December! His name is Hermano Vázquez and he is hilarious! He told us that throughout our missions, we will always have a pensionista. He said they're like sweet little grandmas who cook all your food for you and wash your clothes. So that will be pretty great! He also said the hermanas usually get really nice apartments. He said that most missionaries only go to 4 or 5 areas throughout their mission. But we also got a new mission president this month, so we'll see if things change a little bit. It was so great to talk to him though! It definitely calmed some of my fears about going into the field.

My teachers are both so hilarious. There's a picture attached of me and Hermano Vásquez and Hermana Oliveros. She was kind of a temporary teacher to help Hno. Vásquez at first because we are his first North American group. We took that picture this morning at the temple and Hermano Flores was supposed to be there too but he didn't come :( We all think Hermano Vásquez is just like Timon off of the Lion King. The other day he had the funnies conversation with him. He asked us ''¿Qué es 'cookie crack'?'' and we were like ''Candy Crush?'' and he said ''Noooo... Cookie smart?'' and then we realized he was trying to say ''Smart Cookie''. It was so funny! They are just so fun to talk to, and the language barrier makes it even more hilarious.

So our investigators are doing really good! Also, just to clarify, our investigators are just our teachers (Hno. Flores and Vásquez) wearing t-shirts or something. Haha it's so funny. But we had our investigator named Persy and he moved to Chile last week. He was doing really great though. So now we have Ricardo to teach. We only have like two more lessons with him and I think he has a lot to learn, so we'll see how that goes! Italo is doing so great! We had a really great lesson with him this week and got him to commit to baptism. So now he's preparing for his baptism on August 1st! Maybe I'll be attending a baptism of a real investigator that day in the field!

Well, that's all I have to say for now. I'm not sure when exactly I'll be able to email again, but I'm sure I'll have a lot to say! Also, I would love to get letters once I'm out of the CCM! And hopefully I'll finally be able to send letters by then too! I hope you all have a fantastic week. Stay safe and always stay positive! I love you all!!!

Week 4 - I'm an Avocado!

¡Hola Familia! How are you doing? There's always something wrong with these keyboards, so today the problems is that the enter button won't work, so I'm sorry! Haha. So I am officially an ''Advancado'' or as we like to call them ''Avocado''! That means we only have two more weeks in the CCM! It's so crazy!!! I have been having such a great time here, but I am really excited to finally go out there and get to work! On Saturday, we all got to go out and proselite for a few hours and guess what mission we went to?! Lima South!!! It was so cool to be able to be in my own mission for a little while. We were in the San Juan area and it was pretty similar to where we are now around the temple and everything. I was with Hna. Russell and a latina missionary named Hna. Bisama. She knew a little bit of English, so that was really good. We were with an older lady who was a member from that area. We basically walked around, looking for addresses and knocking on doors. We finally were able to teach a lesson right before we had to leave. It was this older lady and her granddaughter. They had a really small apartment-type house that we all sat in. They asked me to say the opening prayer, so that was scary! Haha it was a really short and simple prayer. Then the latina missionary and member taught her something but me and Hna. Russell couldn't really understand what was going on. When we left, Hna. Bisama said that she couldn't even understand the lady that well and she might have been speaking one of the random languages here, like Cechuwa. But it was really cool because the granddaughter said how she liked the song ''I am a Child of God'' from primary, so we all sang it. Then the granddaughter said the closing prayer, and I just thought it was so cool how similar our prayers were. I have really had to ''become as a little child'' because of the language barrier and everything. Everything we say is really simple because we don't know how to say much. It's really neat. Earlier this week, me and Hna. Joyner were talking with one of our teachers Hna. Vásquez, and he was so surprised by how much we had improved and everything. He asked us what we had been doing to get better at the language. Honestly, I was thinking that I wasn't improving as much at that point and was trying to figure out how I could do better. So we just told him it was the gift of tongues! That gift is so real, it's amazing. I hope I can continue to improve more and more every day. So another thing we did this week was watch Boyd K. Packer's funeral. It was really special to be able to watch that and hear all the things said about him. Other than that, the week has been pretty normal. We said goodbye to all the Advancados who left on Monday or Tuesday. Soon that will be us!!! Next week will be my last P-day here in the CCM! It is so crazy how fast this time is going by. I hope you are all having fun and staying safe! Thank you so much for you love and support!!! I love you all!        Love, Hermana Winward :)

Halfway through the CCM!

Hey everyone!

So this week hasnt really been that exciting. Also, the apostrophes arent working on this keyboard so Im sorry about that! Anyway, we are still working hard and trying to learn as much as we possibly can!

The Fourth of July was the best!!! The cooks in the cafeteria decorated it in American flags and other red, white, and blue decorations. It was so fun! Then for lunch we ate hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, french fries, onion rings, watermelon, lemonade, apple pie, and ice cream! It was a huge meal but it was so good! It was also our last meal before fasting, so that was good. It was so nice of them to do that for all of us! Other than lunch, the day was just like any other.

Spanish is coming a lot slower than it was at first. I feel like this week I kind of hit a wall. For some reason, its really hard for me to remeber certain words. People will tell me over and over again what a word is and I still dont remember it when I actually need to use it! But I will learn it all eventually. Slowly but surely! I think I have gotten better at understanding people when they talk to me, but I usually need them to repeat what they say at least twice really slowly! One of my teachers talks so fast! I never understand him when he talks super fast. But I can understand people for the most part and sometimes I can respond. Thats usually the hardest part. I know what theyre saying but I just dont know how to answer or what to say back! It will come though. I cant wait to be able to talk more fluently.

We have two investigators right now. Theyre names are Italo and Persy. We have invited Italo several times to be baptized but every time he says he needs more time or wants to learn more about the church. I feel like we have already taught him every lesson so its kind of hard! But he always does what we ask him to do as far as reading, praying, and going to church. He didnt even have problems with committing to live the word of wisdom, so that was good! Now we just need to get him to commit to baptism! Our other investigator is named Persy and hes an alcoholic. So we are trying to teach him about the word of wisdom and repentance. He doesnt live with his wife and daughter right now, but hes trying to get to the point where he can. I think hes been doing pretty good though. He wants to change and hes willing to do what he needs to make that change!

On Saturday, all of us who have been here for three weeks will go proselyting! Im really excited but also really nervous. Most of the other missionaries usually go to my mission to proselyte, which is Lima South! But they probably will have those of us going to Lima South to go to a different mission for that. From the group that went out two weeks ago, they said that Lima South was really poor, there were dogs everywhere, and these hills were just covered with little houses. One hermana said they walked up all these stairs to get to the top of a hill. Hearing all that made me really excited to go out to my mission! I know it will be hard sometimes, but I am just so ready to get to work!!!

Thats all I have to say this week! I hope you all have a wonderful week and find ways to serve others every day! Im trying to work on that too--no matter how small it is, you can always help someone in need! I love you all!!! Have a great week!

Love, Hermana Winward

Week 2 - Hola from PERU!!!

Hola Everyone!

How are you all? I have a lot to say, so this might be really long and possibly boring, so bear with me! Haha :) I can´t believe I´ve been here for two weeks now. It's crazy! The CCM is pretty fun. It's way smaller than I expected it to be but it's super fun! It's nice to be able to get to know pretty much everyone. The food is pretty good, for the most part! I just barely ate some cold turkey or chicken for lunch, I'm not exactly sure what it was. But it's usually pretty good! Also, the showers are either hotter than lava or water from the north pole, there's no in between! Haha :) The new North American elders and hermanas arrived last night. There's like 40 of them!!! Two of them are staying in our room (which includes me, Hma Joyner, Hma Esser, and Hma Russell--all going to Lima South! and I'm not sure yet where the new girls are going).

My district is the only district with only hermanas. It's super fun! There's the four of us who are going to Lima South, two are going to Lima West, and two are going to Trujillo! They're the only ones in the CCM right now who are going there. It was so fun to be able to watch the Trujillo temple get dedicated last Sunday. I'm so lucky I was able to be here for that!

So my daily schedule usually going like this: wake up & get ready, eat breakfast, have personal study, then physical activity, get ready again, have class, lunch, class again, TALL (language study on the computers), class, dinner, class, daily planning, then we go to bed! It feels like we're in class all day, which is true! Haha but it's fun. Our district is great and our teachers are the best! In the morning and after lunch, we have Hermano Vazquez and sometimes Hermana Oliveros. In the evenings, we have Hermano Flores. We've already had three investigators so far! We taught Manuel for a weekish and then he "went back to Chile" but he was replaced by Persy. In the mornings, we've started teaching Italo. It's been fun to be able to plan lessons for them, but the hard part is trying to teach in Spanish! I think the language is coming though, slowly but surely. It helps to have teachers who don't speak very much english because then I have to learn!

One night in class with Hermano Flores, he had a candy bar and some of the hermanas wanted it. So he gave it to us and we just passed it down the row, each of us taking a bite! It was so funny. He tried to take of video of us but we ate it too fast. The other night, be brought us all our own candy and they were like these chocolate covered almonds, and they were SO good! Better than the ones at Costco! Haha ;) And in class the other day with Hermana Oliveros, she was teaching us ways to study by topic. So the example one was the Atonement, and she asked us if we knew any scriptures that went with that. Right away, I said "Alma 7:11-13!" Everyone was surprised I knew one so fast and Hermana Oliveros handed me the whiteboard marker and said something like "I'm passing my job on to you!" haha it was a great honor ;) For some reason, me and my companion are good at knowing scripture references!

On P-days, we have the wonderful opportunity to go to the Lima temple and do endowment sessions. It's the best thing ever! The temple is really small, not like the ones in Utah! Haha but it's such an amazing experience to be there. It's nice to get outside the gated walls of the CCM and learn what the outside world is like. We also go to stores to get groceries or souvenirs. Last week, we went to this store called Tottus and it was basically a Peruvian Walmart! Haha. It was fun.

Í'm having such a good time here! I'm learning and growing so much, and so grateful for the opportunity I have to be here. I have one quick spiritual experience to share with you. So on Saturday night, me and the other Hermanas going to Lima South asked our Zone Leaders for blessings, just for comfort and strength. So we went into a classroom and the four of us received blessings. Elder Riddick gave me my blessing, with his companion Elder Hart. Everything he said was exactly what I needed to hear. That was such a strong testimony to be that priesthood power is true and that my Heavenly Father loves me. Later, someone told us that Elder Riddick and Elder Hart shared the experience of giving us blessings and Elder Riddick said it was one of the most spiritual experiences hé's ever had. He said that whenever Elder Hart was giving the blessing, he would think of things that needed to be said but he couldn't say them because he wasn't the one giving the blessing. But every time he had those thoughts, Elder Hart would say the exact same thing Elder Riddick was thinking of. It was so amazing.

I know this church is true! I'm so grateful for all of your wonderful examples and your help in getting me on this mission! I love you all so much!!! Have an amazing week!

Love, Hermana Winward :)
